Import of data file is slow

Although not a bug per say, but the speed could be improved. Even for a small file it takes 3-4 seconds on MacBook pro. Thanks.

v3.3 has significantly faster file loading. A 768 MB file now loads in ~6.4 seconds, down from ~20s, outperforming numpy's loadtxt.
